In the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, England skipper Joe Root scored his 19th century during the third day of play. This century, which was studded with England's innings, took its name after a bad beginning, with several unique statistics. Earlier, in the first test played on that terrain Root scored 228 runs.
Root's second-highest test century as a foreign batsman has been recorded on far tougher soil in Sri Lanka. This is Root's third test century in Sri Lanka. Earlier Azhar Ali, Shikhar Dhawan, Brian Lara, Mohammad Ashraful, Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara and Younis Khan scored three centuries in Sri Lanka.
Root became the fourth player in the world to score a century in the 98th and 99th matches of his Test career. This feat were already achieved before him by Sourav Ganguly of India, Brain Lara of West Indies and Australia's Michael Clarke.
