After remaining off the road for two months, the state-run PRTC got a lukewarm response from passengers during the first three days of resumption of service.
The PRTC, which is in the red, started its service on limited routes on Wednesday. Till Friday, only 7,900 people travelled by bus.
Jaskiran Singh, PRTC MD, said occupancy was less on the first three days. He said it appeared people were avoiding bus travel, fearing contracting the infection. They were opting for personal vehicles over public transport.
"I hope things will improve," he said. The MD said only 83 PRTC buses ran on the first day, 114 second and 119 on the third day. He said more buses would be pressed into service if the occupancy increased.
"People are still unaware that the bus service has resumed. Moreover, they may not be aware of the precautions to be taken during the travel such as sanitising the hands and social distancing," he added.
