To help students grasp nuances of the spoken language, especially English, the Education Department has introduced language listening laboratories in 330 government schools.
With an aim to catch them young to tutor them in handling communication in English, the programme has been introduced only in the primary schools.

We know the importance English has in academic standing of students when they go for higher education and in their profession as well.

Primary schools in Ludhiana district have got the biggest share of 25 schools, followed by Patiala (23) and Hoshiarpur (22). Barnala, Faridkot, Moga and Pathankot and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar districts are on the lowest step of the ladder with 10 schools each.
Guriqbal Singh, a teacher at Government Primary School, Behrampur Road, Gurdaspur, said: "We have received a portion of the equipment for the special language learning lab. The programme has been designed to improve students' listening skills and pronunciation."
Krishan Kumar, Secretary, School Education, said: "We know the importance English has in academic standing of students when they go for higher education and in their profession as well. We are also giving lessons in Punjabi, but special efforts are being made to help them improve their English comprehension and speaking skills."
The schools are being supplied the required pen drives, headphones and amplifiers. Schools can make use of the voice of their own teachers or even use recorded lessons.
Being introduced under 'Padho Punjab, Padhao Punjab', the programme aims at improving students' basic conversational skills. "We are trying to go beyond the theory classes because nobody can learn a foreign language without practice," Kumar said, adding that language labs encouraged communication between students and teachers as these had been designed in a way that creating groups was essential and these also promoted a message to increase interactive sessions.
