Less than two months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court was told that 1,326 police officers/officials were facing criminal cases, the Punjab Government on Tuesday submitted another affidavit giving further details of accused and convicts in uniform.
The matter was placed before the Bench of Justice Ritu Bahri. But it was referred to the Bench of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal as it was originally hearing the case. The figure furnished before the High Court was, on the previous date of hearing, disputed by a policeman dismissed from service.
His counsel has claimed that entire information earlier sought by the HC in the matter has not been forthcoming. In fact, several other police officers were facing criminal cases. Some of them were continuing in service even after their conviction.
Policing the police, the HC had then called for details of accused and convicts in uniform. It has asked the Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Home Affairs and Justice, to file the affidavit setting out the details of FIRs registered against the serving police officers of all ranks in the state.
