In a Euro 2020 round of 16 clashes at Wembley Stadium on London, England, Old rivals England and Germany lock their horns in a Tuesday night.
Raheem Sterling in the 75th minute, scored to restore Britain dominance. At the halfway stroke Harry Kane had the finest opportunity, but he missed it and later converted into a goal in 87th minute. At halftime it remained untouched. The Round of 16 match was indead head-to-head in two of the largest football nations - England and Germany. This was the first time since the 1996 Euro semifinals that the two nations met in a knockout game in a major football championship.
In the 1966 World Cup final for the National Team's best football victory, England defeated West Germany in extra time. But at the 1972 European Championships the West Germans triumphed 3-1 and then in the semi-finals in 1996 won penalties.
England was near restoration of parity in 1996 when a two-goal effort by Frank Lampard on the edge of the penalty box struck the base and jumped down beyond the target line before returning to Manuel Neuer.
After the match, Neuer, now leading the German national side on the 2020 Euro, confessed that the match officers were being tormented after the tie. He added, He continued, "I tried not to react to the referee and just concentrate on what was happening. I realised it was over the line and I think the way I carried on so quickly fooled the referee into thinking it was not over."
